How to Write an SEO-Optimized Title Tag

Title tags are one of the most important on-page SEO factors. Google typically displays 50–60 characters, but the real limit is pixel width (~600px). Here are the key rules:

  • Keep titles under 600px wide (roughly 55–60 characters in Arial 20px)
  • Put your primary keyword near the beginning
  • Include your brand name, usually at the end separated by a pipe or dash
  • Make every title unique — duplicate titles confuse search engines
  • Write for humans first — the title must earn the click

FAQ

Why does pixel width matter more than character count?

Google renders title tags and truncates them based on pixel width, not character count. Wide characters like "W" and "M" take up more space than "i" or "l". This tool uses the Canvas API to measure accurate pixel widths using the same font size Google uses.

What happens if my title is too long?

Google will truncate it with an ellipsis (…) in search results, cutting off potentially important information. Always aim to stay under 600px to ensure your full title is shown.

Should I always include my brand name in the title?

For most pages, yes — especially for brand recognition. The exception is when the title would become too long. Many sites reserve brand name for the homepage only.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Google has confirmed that meta descriptions are not a direct ranking signal. However, a well-written description improves click-through rate (CTR), which can indirectly benefit your rankings.

Can Google rewrite my title tag?

Yes, Google may rewrite title tags if it determines the original doesn't accurately represent the page content. Following best practices (accurate, concise, keyword-rich) reduces the chance of rewrites.
